ISBN-13: 978-0615275161

A perfect companion to your local or regional flora, the Handbook of Edible and Poisonous Plants of Western North America is packed with information on the edible and poisonous properties of plants in western North America.  Designed as a field-going reference, the Handbook provides vital information on edible species, how to prepare them, the habitats they occupy, and their distribution in the west.  Toxic look-a-likes are also covered.  A separate section on poisonous plants gives insight on those species to avoid.

Experienced foragers will appreciate the Handbook’s compact size and complete species list.  Less experienced or novice foragers will benefit from the inclusion of common names, tips on special preparation for some species, and the inclusion of species that can be mistaken for wild edibles.  The Handbook is an indispensable addition to your backpack or field vest!

Please note that this book is NOT an identification manual and it does not possess line drawings or pictures.  It is a thorough review of the literature regarding edible and poisonous species of western North America, and it summarizes edible and toxic properties, preparation, toxic look-a-likes, special preparation techniques, geographic distribution, and habitat.  You will be amazed at the amount of information packed into this single book!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Brian Elliott has had a life-long interest in plants and ethnobotany, and has worked with plants throughout his career.  He has worked as a landscaper, nurseryman, plant propagator, native seed collector, and as a botanist for the USDA Forest Service in California and Colorado.  He holds B.S. degrees in Horticulture and Philosophy from the University of Idaho, and a M.S. in Botany from the University of Wyoming.  His interest in plants has now focused on plant identification and the practical uses of plants. Experimenting with edible plants on backpacking trips has driven his desire for a single comprehensive volume covering both the edible and poisonous plants of western North America.  This desire has led to publication of the Handbook, which is complete yet compact and easily carried on overnight trips.

Brian is currently the managing partner of Elliott Environmental Consulting, performing rare plant and floristic surveys throughout the western United States.  A copy of the Handbook always accompanies him on his travels!
